The sector in Switzerland
Construction covers structural and civil engineering, finishing trades and building services. Order books follow building activity, and therefore permit procedures, interest rates and public investment, which makes the sector fluctuate more than, say, healthcare. Most employment falls under collective agreements that set minimum wages, working hours and holiday entitlement bindingly.
Usual qualifications
Typical is a federal VET diploma in a construction trade — mason, carpenter, plumbing or electrical installer — often extended by further training as a foreman, site supervisor or master craftsman. For planning and site management, a college-level technician qualification or a degree in civil engineering or architecture is common. Safety training and, depending on the role, driving licences are usual additional requirements.
Where the vacancies concentrate
Demand follows building activity and is therefore highest in the agglomerations and their growth belts. Large infrastructure projects can create considerable regional demand for a limited period. Part of the work is weather-dependent, so some regions and roles show seasonal patterns with quieter winter months.
Routes in
The standard route is an apprenticeship with a federal VET diploma. Adults have access to catch-up qualifications and shorter training; assisting roles allow entry without a qualification, with the option of obtaining one while working. Progression in construction runs unusually clearly through formal training stages.
