The sector in Switzerland
Swiss IT splits across three very different kinds of employer: international groups with development sites here, a dense network of SMEs and service providers, and public administration. A large share of IT roles is not created inside the tech industry at all but in banking, insurance, pharma and retail — so searching only for technology companies misses a substantial part of the market.
Usual qualifications
Common routes are a degree in computer science (ETH, EPFL, a university of applied sciences), a federal VET diploma as an IT specialist followed by further training, or a college-level qualification in business informatics. IT is also one of the fields where career changers with demonstrable projects have realistic prospects. English is often enough in internationally staffed teams; SMEs and public administration usually expect German or French.
Where the vacancies concentrate
The centres are greater Zurich, the Lake Geneva region around Lausanne and Geneva, Zug, and Basel with its life-sciences environment. Bern has a profile of its own through federal administration and federally linked enterprises. Remote and hybrid arrangements are more common here than in most other fields, which widens the search radius well beyond your own canton.
Routes in
Usual entry points are internships and junior roles, an apprenticeship followed by vocational baccalaureate and a university of applied sciences, or a move from an adjacent function — support, testing, data analysis — into development. Vendor certifications rarely replace a qualification but visibly complement one.
